Hey Doc, How do you know this works?
A few years back, my own back was wrecked. Two herniated discs. At the time I was a medical student, I was studying the body, learning to read imaging, and learning the process to treat herniated discs — I could look at my own imaging and tell you exactly what was wrong and exactly how to fix it in the conventional medical model.
I tried it all, medications, physical therapy, injections, but I still couldn't bend over to tee up the ball without wincing.
I was a 20-plus handicap at the time. Not because I couldn't swing a club. Because my body physically would not let me do the things a good swing requires.
Here's the part that changed everything for me.
Everyone I talked to wanted to treat the spot that hurt. My lower back. Rest it, ice it, medicate it, work on it. Nobody stopped to ask the more important question — why is the lower back the thing that hurts in the first place?
When I finally went looking for that answer, I found it.
My mid back barely rotated. My hips were tight and weak. My core was loose as a goose and my lower back had quietly been picking up the slack for years — doing a job it was never built to do, every single swing.
So I figured out how to fix that. I got the mid back and hips moving again. I built the stability underneath them. And I stopped asking my lower back to be something it isn't.
The, I want to fix my backen something I didn't expect happened — my game followed. I went from that 20-plus handicap all the way down to a 3. Same clubs. Same swing. A completely different body.
That's not a swing story. That's a body story. And it's the reason Functional Golf Academy exists.
